Bring hummingbirds to your balcony or backyard. Even in New York City

Hummingbird in NYC

By Brian Hester

Would you like to have hummingbirds on your balcony or in your yard? Even in New York City. All you need is a feeder and some nectar.

You too can enjoy the relaxation of watching hummingbirds in your very own back yard or balcony. Yes even in NYC. I have been cultivating a hummingbird feeding spot for many years with growing success each year. To get started all you need is a hummingbird feeder. Make your own nectar.. very easy 1 part sugar 4 parts water heat to boil and turn off. Very Important ALWAYS allow nectar to COOL before serving. Best not to purchase store made nectar as they contain additives and perspectives. In warm weather, above 80 degree, you will need to change the nectar every three day as it will ferment and, as you may of may not know humans are the only species to knowing consume alcohol. At the least the nectar should be changed every 7 days. One of the most important things is to have your feeder out as early in the season as possible, within the next 10 days is still fine. These tiny creatures usually weigh less than 2 ounces and travel over 4, 000 miles. Are we there yet? Best of birding.
